PIKA Weihenstephan™ FastOrange™ B Agar is a color-changing agar used specifically for detecting microbial contamination during the brewing process and in beer and brewery products. Beer spoilers such as acid producing Lactobacillus and Pediococcus are easily detected by colony formation accompanied by an easy-to-read color change; the colonies cause a color change in the underlying agar from violet to yellow that is evident even with turbid samples. Anaerobic incubation is unnecessary, even for beer spoiling bacteria.

Detectable microorganisms include:

• Lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillaceae) such as Lactobacillus and Pediococcus
• Acetic acid bacteria (Acetobacteriaceae) such as Acetobacter and Gluconobacter
• Anaerobic beer spoiling bacteria such as Pectinatus and Megasphaera
• Beer spoiling yeast such as Dekkera (Brettanomyces); Brewers’ yeast is suppressed
